Punkaharju Resort is a fast developing tourism area in Tuunaansaari, Savonlinna, near the famous Punkaharju ridge nature protection and outdoors recreation area. The total area of the resort is 80 hectars. Distance to Savonlinna is 10 km. The resort can easily be reached by train via its own railway stop Retretti. Travel time to Helsinki by train is 3,5 hours.

Tourism operators in the resort include Punkaharju Holiday Centre (Punkaharjun Lomakeskus), Saimaa Safaris (Saimaan Safarit), Harjun Portti Holiday Center, Aquapark Kesämaa, Wellness Centre Harjutar, Retretti Art Centre and Art Manor Johanna Oras (Taidekartano Johanna Oras). EasyHoliday is the investment company building and marketing holiday homes in the resort.

The resort is profiled with family, nature and cultural tourism. Accommodations options include camping, cottage rental and luxury villas. The resort offers activities in nature, cultural attractions and activities for children.

Main customer segments

The main customer segments of the resort are Finnish families with childred, 35+ couples, families with children from St. Petersburg and other Russian customers and Finnish companies and groups.

Concept development

Punkaharju Resort brand development has been launched recently because of the desire of the operators to offer clearly profiled and distinguishable holiday experience. All tourism operators in the resort are participating in the branding work.

Investments

Between 2007 and 2012 investment in the Punkaharju Resort have reached 14 million euros. This includes renovation and construction of accommodation capacity, renewal of Aquapark Kesämaa and investments in activities infra, equipment and service provision.

Measures of success

New investment has spurred robust growth in recent years. Expected growth in 2011-2012 is over 10 per cent which is typical growth figure also for the previous years. Increased demand was generated through enhanced quality of accommodation and the year round growth in visits by Russian tourists. The most remarkable growth in visitor numbers has taken place in the Russian segment. Increased b2b marketing efforts have resulted in increase of promising growth in corporate customers.

Visions for the future

Currently, the accommodation capacity in the resort if over 100 holiday apartments with ongoing construction of new capacity. The master plan and zoning for the resort permit the expansion of accommodation capacity to up to 4000 beds. Provision has been made for the construction of a wellness centre. Lake shore will remain in open access for recreational use. The master plan reserves ample recreational and natural areas to make sure that the quality holiday experience in Finnish lake nature will not be compromised.

New hotel to complement accommodation options will be opened in June 2013. Plans for a luxury sauna and meeting facility are being prepared.

The resort has activated investor search for the realization of a spa hotel complex and additional holiday apartments construction.

Saimaa Summit ICT 2012 -kansainvälinen seminaari pidetään Savonlinnassa Savonlinnasalissa 5.7.2012.  Edelliseksi päiväksi on luvassa myös mielenkiintoista alan kasvuyrittäjyyttä ja start up-ja kiinnostavaa ohjelmaa.

Runsas joukko seudun teknologia-alan yrittäjiä saapui pohtimaan Savonlinnan kasvuyrittäjyyden edellytyksiä Nohevan järjestämään Bisness Aamu tilaisuuteen.

Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu, Lappeenrannan teknillinen yliopisto sekä Pietarin Polyteknillinen Yliopisto yhdistävät osaamisensa uudenlaisten älykkäiden energia- ja raaka-ainetehokkaiden materiaaliratkaisuiden kehittämiseksi. Yhteistyö perustuu puitesopimukseen, jonka Savonlinnan Seudun Kuntayhtymä ja Savonlinnan Teknologiapuisto Noheva solmivat Pietarin polyteknillisen yliopiston kanssa vuonna 2010.

Mikkelin Ammattikorkeakoulun (MAMK) Savonlinnan Kuitulaboratorio on saanut 880 000€ TEKES rahoitusta paperikemikaalien ja lisäaineiden annostelun tutkimukseen. WetChem projektilla pyritään parantamaan paperinvalmistuksen kustannustehokkuuden edellytyksiä. Yhtenä tutkimuskohteena on paperin täyteainepitoisuuden kasvattaminen eri menetelmillä.

Teknologiapuisto Noheva on tulevaisuuden metsäteollisuuden, metsäbiotalouden sekä ICT-alan asiantuntijakeskittymä, joka vahvistaa näiden alojen kehitystä ja edelläkävijyyttä.
